Telehandler Tires: Choosing the Right Type

Telehandlers, also known as telescopic forklifts, are popular multi-purpose machines that combine the functions of both a forklift and a crane. Choosing the right tires for your telehandler is important to ensure that it performs at its maximum potential. There are 3 main tire options for telehandlers, including air pneumatic tires, foam pneumatic tires, and solid tires. They all have different uses and all come with advantages and disadvantages.

Air pneumatic tires are the least expensive option and work well with smooth surfaces. There are 2 types of pneumatic tires: bias and radial. Bias-ply tires are made with layers of rubber placed in a crisscross pattern. These layers are made with nylon fabric coated in rubber. Radial tires are made from a casing of steel cables coated in rubber and steel belts. Air pneumatic tires are not recommended for construction work.

Foam pneumatic tires are more puncture resistant and perform well on construction sites. They are typically heavier due to the foam and give more traction on surfaces. This type of tire is also less flexible and gives a rougher ride. Foam pneumatic tires can get sidewall damage, which means if too much damage occurs then foam will leak out the sides. Users also have to be aware of extremely heavy loads, as the wheels are less flexible and can get wobbly under extreme conditions.

Solid tires are the most expensive choice but are also the strongest, since they are made with solid rubber. This type of tire is fit for extreme surfaces and heavy loads. They will not be affected even when driving on glass and nails. There is no air or foam inside, so the tires are very heavy and have the least bounce. This provides increased stability on the job, and companies often choose solid tires for the high safety and functionality despite the larger price tag.
